ICA and NYE

Barbara Kruger (b. 1945 in Newark, NJ), new commission for the ICA, Untitled (Hope/Fear), 2022

I was grateful to end 2023 by going to the ICA on the 31 December. What an inspiring visit it was. On the entry way there was a commission that was unavoidable and which was a clear reminder of the times we live in. Times of war in several countries, times of uncertainty for many women when it comes to our rights, and also to the rights pertaining to our bodies.

There were exhibits on display also in their gallery space that really encouraged my artistic heart to continue my path of reflection and of producing art that feels close to my heart and to let my creativity be wild and courageous.

The first exhibit Invisible Ground of Sympathy was curated by the artist Taylor Davis, Davis is the first artist to be invited to curate an exhibition based on the ICA’s collection. The exhibition made me feel at ease, even when it was raising many questions, I felt at ease to see so many women artists included in the exhibition, the balance was a good one, there were also several male artists in the exhibition.

I did not have all the time I wish I had to really loose myself in every bit of this amazing space, a beautiful, airy and inspiring place. So much enthusiasm from its staff, it was palpable in every room. They were proud to be among these artworks, they wanted people to feel that and the warmth with which they welcomed visitors was a bout of fresh air. Most museums and galleries tend to be intimidating, sterile and cold in my opinion.

I tried to document all the women artists on exhibit and I used extra time appreciating their art. Most of them are included in this post.

It will never cease to amaze me how much creativity there is in this world and all the different means of expression there are. The ICA abounded with creativity through its current exhibits, and more through the areas dedicated for children and youth to engage.

Lastly their bookstore was also a gem. It had so many books dedicated to art both for children and adults, among many other things. It became instantly a favourite place of mine and a place I look forward to visiting in the near future again.
